Reivew: Youdao (有道) Dictionary Pen Version 2

Monday, March 1, 2021

Chinese is the nemesis of many in Singapore. It is a beautiful language but sadly, there's just insufficient time to expose ourselves to the beauty of its origins. Growing up, I struggled with the language as my family spoke predominantly in English. The closest to getting myself interested was when Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai and Andy Lau graced the airwaves. I was smitten and obsessed with their songs and wanted to learn the lyrics. However, knowing the pronunciation of each character was painful, and searching up the words in a paper dictionary was agonizing.

Fast forward many decades later, with the advent of technology, dictionaries have evolved. No longer do we rely on the paper dictionary. There are now apps, reading pens and most recently discovered -- the OPTICAL YOUDAO (有道)DICTIONARY PEN!

The Youdao (有道)dictionary pen is such an awesome invention, I wished it was available when I was taking my PSLE.

Prior to owning it, we had a series of aids ranging from the electronic kind of dictionary (BESTA), some random reading pen bought from Taobao to the reading pen given by Berries (a local Chinese enrichment centre).

The BESTA electronic dictionary was one recommended by our Primary school but it is sadly, the most underutilized. It is a chore to key in the word in question and as such, it has pretty much been a white elephant in our home. Big K has a huge aversion towards it. Consequently, I do not see an improvement in her comprehension where there are generally some words that are out of the syllabus. Try as I might, she simply refuses to pick up her dictionary. I don't blame her.

When presented with the optical reading dictionary pen, she was instantly enthralled. It was love at first sight. She badgered me to allow her to bring it to school. I'm also seeing how independent she has become, reaching out the pen whenever she is attempting a composition or comprehension. A testament to the joys of using this gadget was that she discovered the use of voice recognition! How smart! Should you not know how to write a certain character, you may simply speak to the pen and the word cum definition would instantly pop up! This is way better than Google Translate, Pleco or the C-Pen, which several forums rave about.

It is able to scan and translate sentences

Did you know that Youdao is a New York Stock Exchange-listed company, which brands itself as a leading intelligent learning company in China? It also developed a neural network translation engine (有道词典)which seems to host a tonne more words than many other sources we've tried.

Below is a summary of the pros

PROS

1) AI Voice Assistance

This is a very useful feature when you wish to search up a word. But do note, your pronunciation has to be accurate lest it gives you the wrong word. However, it is said that through the high-fidelity speaker, pronunciation can be learned accurately.

2) User friendly

All you need to do is scan and translate. It is very idiot proof.

3) Works on handwritten text

4) Reads out sentences or even paragraphs

Scans and translates multi-line or sentences fluently. It reads fast too. At 15 words per second, this definitely satisfies the need for speed.

5) Provides definition in Chinese and English

In some words, they even provide other variations and examples on how to use the word or how it is matched as a phrase. It is compatible with loads of picture books, newspapers and textbooks. All these provided the fonts are small enough. (Less than 2cm). It is also able to recognise various types of fonts.

6) Portable

You can carry it around anywhere! Just put it in your pocket!

7) Clear audio

Unlike several other pens which made me cringe when listening to their English diction, this doesn't. It is crisp and clear.

8) Translates Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese & English words

Its translation is up to 98%

9) Shows 多音字

10) Suitable for both right and left-handers.

It reads from left to right but has both left and right orientations.

11) Light and rechargeable using USB

After charging, one is able to use it offline for 8 hours

12) Add words to favourites

You may add words to your favourites and revise them in the future. It has a big storage for learning.

13) Bluetooth & Type-C Connection

Connects with your Bluetooth or type-C headphones easily.

14) Sleek Design

I love how sleek it looks coupled with the colour, it's classy. I know I sound shallow but such things does affect my joy in using.

With every technological gadget, there are bound to be some flaws. Youdao (有道)Dictionary pen is no exception.

CONS

1) As it is made in China, for China, certain local (Singapore) phrases cannot be found. For instance, you are not able to find the phrase 巴刹 in it as over in China, they call it 市场.

2) It can only read texts that are less than 2cm. Optimally about 1.2cm in height. Hence, it would not be compatible with several flashcards which we own. That said, at a higher level, they are generally faced with words which are small in font size.

3) When scanning a sentence, you may not know what you are looking for and accidentally scan a word or two before or after the actual phrase or sentence. Therefore, you may need a few trials to get the right characters in to make sense out of things.

4) Pronunciation may not be picked up. Big K tried saying a word or two, unfortunately her diction isn't accurate enough for the pen to pick up the correct character. I managed to breeze through. In a way, this may aid her in correcting her pronunciation. Probably a pro more than a con  if you think of it positively?

What we currently have is the Version 2. There is apparently another model Version 3 where one main difference is its interactive reading function. They have collaborated with Scholastic Inc to allow visual interactions for point reading for specific picture books! This is quite a draw for the younger kids but in my opinion, the Version 2 suffices for the general public.

There are massive resources to tap on for the Version 3 and you may check out more about the Version 3 over here if you are keen.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It is clear that the Youdao (有道)Dictionary pen is our hot favourite of the moment. It really works for us and is igniting Big K's interest in the language. It is a huge step towards our efforts in self-directed learning. I would strongly recommend it for kids above the age of 6years old as then, they may be able to read more of the definition. It is also a great tool to have to encourage older children to read chapter books. Definitely a useful device to have to support your child's learning journey. So far, our other pens were mainly able to read only the books that are within their limited database of prescribed books. The quantum leap in technology and innovation today is undeniable. Such gadgets are a necessary evil. Being raised in a digital era, the Youdao Dictionary pen is here to stay and will gain traction and inspire many to embrace the language.

Homelearning:: Easter fun

Thursday, April 20, 2017

I am always excited when there is a festival coming up. Not only because we get to party and bond as a family, but it is also a great thematic learning opportunity.

The long weekend of Easter Sunday just came and went. We aren't Christians but I think it is nice for my children to be exposed to the story behind Easter lest they think that Easter is a celebration of bunnies and eggs!

Was pretty glad to get this book from My Greatest Child at Citysquare Mall. It was going at 1/2 price!

To complement the theme, below are the activities we engaged in. I think I might have outdone myself this year!

This was an inspiration from @tiny3rds I basically printed these adorable chicks and pasted onto a piece of used cardboard. Then I painstakingly cut with a blunt blade. -_- The process of making was far longer than playing. Small K took less than 1min to place them into the relevant holes.

Sensory treasure hunt for matching eggs. The eggs had shapes and the kids had to find the matching shapes and colour.

Counting activity. It was quite a challenge to get Small K to have the patience to count through. This boy is completely different from his sister in terms of learning styles. I foresee it is going to be an uphill task.

This activity is a recycled one. Inspired by @playlexue. The faces of each Sesame Street character was painstakingly cut out! My eyeballs almost popped! This year, i changed the action slips and hey presto we've got a new activity! The kids enjoyed it tremendously especially when it involved physical actions.

Gifted by @happytotshelf who played an instrumental role in this event. Very glad to have met her and didn't expect to share so many things in common.

Art and craft. Big K's favourite. I was glad I had these stash in the pile of materials I had! It was a life saviour coz I wasn't prepared to do anything that day but the kids were patiently for mommy to present them with activities. A blessing which I couldn't say no to.

It's about time Small K (35mo) try his hands at lacing. however, it was treated with lukewarm welcome. He used it as a kite and ran around the house instead. -_- I guess that's the difference again, between a boy and a girl? Big K started to show very good fine motor skills at a young age whilst Small K is more adept in his gross motor skills. That said, this boy held the pencil the correct way far earlier than Big K! He must be some kind of genius! teehee

It was all about Science. We discovered that vinegar will disintegrate the egg shell and turn it into a naked egg after 48 hours. It could even bounce! Amazing that the membrane is such a great protection for the chick (if there were a chick). The other Science activity we played with was the overused baking soda with vinegar. Though an old activity, the kids seemed to have great fun and refused to stop. Probably because this time I added colouring and they were busy mixing colours.

Letter hunt. I really didn't expect Small K to know his letters well, but he surprised me! This printable was from totschooling

Colour Sorting. An activity inspired by JsAreana. Once again, lovingly cut out, but activity completed within a few minutes.

It smelt heavenly!

This activity has got to be the highlight of Easter! We were invited to attend an egg pop cake baking session conducted by the queen of chiffon, Susanne Ng. It is my 2-year goal to bake a decent cake and this was certainly a great push. In fact, it pushed not only me, but the husband who decided that he is a whizz at baking. This man is sometimes so full of himself. So much so he has accepted the challenge to bake a birthday cake for Small K's impending birthday next month. It wasn't as difficult as I thought, but the technique needs to be improved. The unmoulding process wasn't that easy. Probably because we couldn't wait for it to cool. Taste wise, it got the thumbs up from the kids! In fact, the kids enjoyed the baking jam so much they kept telling everyone that they baked.

The next highlight of Easter was a meetup with some homelearning IG mommas. These mummies are extremely passionate in teaching their children and are so creative and inspiring. Just look at the activities they prepared for the event and you will know what I mean! It was a great opportunity to show my children how easy and nice to make new friends. Somehow, it doesn't come naturally for my kids to make new friends, hence as their mom, I probably should show them and set a good example. I am glad that I can finally put a face to the many IG accounts I follow.

Small K's favourite activity: Waterbeads!

Egg hunt! Big K was delirious that she found all the eggs and there was a surprise inside!

DIY lava lamp. An activity created by playlexue. She is one creative mommy who puts together interesting stuff for her kid, QR.

Playdoh can never go wrong at a party. These aren't ordinary playdoh. It is homemade by MessyfingersThe tools are so interesting that even I wanted a piece of the action.

Hope you guys had a good rest over the long weekend! I know I need a good  (and long) rest after all these activities!

How we celebrated SG51

Saturday, September 10, 2016

I know. National Day was long gone. But i find it a need to pen down what we did this year as it was pretty eventful. It was a good long break for most of us and I thought I had better make full use of it. A week leading to the long weekend, I have been getting the kids engaged in various National Day activities. If you don't already know, I am a sucker for thematic stuff and will go all out to prep those materials. I would rather the kids be engaged in activities than to spend time in front of the television or other devices. So even if it means killing a whole lot of brain cells and sacrificing sleep, I will do it! Below are some of the activities we did which perhaps you could consider doing with your little ones next year?

Feeding the Merlion activity inspired by a certain Mama J

Various activities we did, including the bunting inspired by A Happy Mum

Look at what BreadTalk came up with to commemorate SG51? Nice isn't it? The kids loved it. Well, they loved mainly the pork floss and left me with the plain bread. -_-

Ever since we shifted back to our own place, several people have been asking to come over for meals. We love hosting but it's getting a tad tiring to do it every.single.weekend. But since it's the long weekend, I had no excuse but to host my immediate family who has been patiently waiting :) So sorry to keep you waiting, guys! I didn't want to cater coz i hate over catering. And secondly, some wanted to try my cooking. Thirdly, I'm overambitious and mad. So I bit the bullet and whipped up what i could for close to 20 pax! Insane isn't it?

Salted Egg Prawns

Fried Bee hoon (ok this one wasn't done by me. I bought it from a stall downstairs :P)

Air Fried Sio Bak.

Curry Chicken. Been a while since I cooked this hence I felt it wasn't quite up to standard that day.

Fried stuffed tau pok. Recipe adapted from The Domestic Goddess Wannabe

My Famous Har Jiong Gai! A success but a pain to fry so many of them! Tried air frying but it wasn't good at all. The result this round was fantastic. So much so, mom and my aunt asked me for my recipe as well as the brand of wok i used! haha

Ahhh and for desserts we had Mao Shan Wang durians!! Durians were in season and they were good this round so we couldn't miss it for the world!

The next day was National Day and we decided to arrange a playdate. Brought the kids out for some good fun at the pool. It was scorching hot though!

Am so in love with this shot of both father and daughter! So much love!

These two were riding, riding and riding!

After a good swim, we continued our physical activities! We were all out to exhaust the kids in hope that they will sleep well! The night ended with dinner at a friend's place. Her place had excellent view of the fireworks and I think it left a deep impression on the kids.

All the events leading up to National Day made me feel very blessed. I am thankful to be born in this country I call home. Many think that the pasture is greener out there, however, I think that Singapore is still a great place to live in. No doubt the standard of living is escalating, but hey, that's life in most countries right? So, Happy Birthday Singapore! I am so proud to be a Singaporean and happy that I am living in this clean and peaceful city.
