How CoolSculpting gave me a bikini bod!

Wednesday, April 1, 2020

At the beginning of treatment with Halley Body Slimming Clinic, I set my aim at achieving a bikini body! If you haven't read it yet, here's the link. Yes, I envisioned myself gravitating towards the crash of waves, prancing confidently like a frisky mare in my bikini. Splashing in the cool waters, being part of the backdrop for the canoes that were plying up and down.

I thought it wasn't possible and that I could only sit by the shores in my oversized tee and watch the waters ebb away rhythmically as the tide came in. But when I met Dr. Terence Tan from Halley Body Slimming, he gave me confidence that he was able to shape me up! He told me that statistically, we can freeze away up to 25% of fats due to CoolSculpting. He confidently assured me that I was able to see the curves after CoolSculpting. In case you are new to this, CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, non-surgical, no downtime fat reduction. It is the only US FDA-approved fat freezing treatment that uses the concept of cryolipolysis to freeze and destroy unwanted fat cells. Afterwhich, the fats will be discharged from the body naturally.

Dr. Terence Tan sure did not lie! After a mere 6 months, my body fat did indeed go down! I commenced my first treatment in September and during the most recent visit in March, the below was my result

My waist circumference went down from 84.7cm to 77cm! It was actually 74.5cm during my last visit in November 2019 but it was either due to human error (likely) or that I had been eating too much during Chinese New Year hence the slight increase. Nonetheless, I can officially announce that I have dropped a size! My weight did not fluctuate too much. There was a loss of approximately 2kg which wasn't too significant. Prior to all these, I went on an epic trip to America and Canada in December and if you had seen how I had feasted over on my Instagram account, you would have been disgusted! Think American portions! So yes, all the loss is due to CoolSculpting

If you need more convincing, here are my before and after shots

I literally sang my lungs out (at home of course lest others think I'm looney) when I saw the images! I was jubilant! It was as if sunshine followed me everywhere!

How many times have you looked at magazines and envied the model's figure? I'm definitely one of them. It's no crime to want to be slimmer. I don't want to be skinny because it will render me haggard. If you lose too much fats, naturally your skin will sag. That's not a tradeoff I'm not willing to sacrifice. Plus CoolSculpting is great as it allows you to choose where you'd like to freeze your fats! It isn't only targeted at your tummy. It can be your arm or even your double chin which you may freeze! I want to be svelte! I want my clothes to fit better. I want to be able to swim with my kids in my bikini without feeling self-conscious. And now I can! Look at the photos below and see my transformation.

Another wedding attended on 7 Dec 2019

The picture on the left was taken in 2019 June. I was so conscious, I had to throw over a dress. In the picture on the right which was taken on 15 March, you can see that my abs are beginning to show!

As you can see, clothes fit me nicely now. I feel great carrying them off well. In fact, I have been getting a lot of great compliments for looking more shapely and slim. I went one size down too! I am so motivated to go on a shopping spree! Oh, and of course, I am going to the beach in my bikini! A great option amidst the Covid-19 situation! Sun, Sand, and picnic mat, here I come!

One step closer to a beach body with Halley

Monday, January 6, 2020

The turquoise lagoon, shaded by young coconut palms. The sundrenched sand, soft and fine, has been calling out to me since 2 months ago when I did CoolSculpting with Halley Body Slimming Clinic (Halley Body).

It has been 2 months since my first session with Halley Body (which you can read here) and I was absolutely excited to find out exactly how much fat I've lost. My dresses certainly fit better these days and some of my shorts are even dropping from my waist! Hmm maybe I have dropped a size unknowingly! I weighed myself constantly and I did shed a few kilos. My diet however has been largely the same although I did consciously try to control myself from eating cakes. I am relishing the thought of cladding on my bikini with pride.

The moment of truth came during my mid review. They measured me. Am I a step closer to my dream washboard body? Though not quite flat yet, I lost an incredible 10cm! That's like 3.9inches! Even my weight had gone down by 2.4kg. Is that insane or what? Such incredible results for just one session! Let the numbers do the talking. Seeing is believing.

They clinic mentioned that I lost 1.5kg, but at home I seem to have lost close to 3kg! Must be thick dress I was wearing on the day of the mid review.

During the review, Dr Terence Tan said that about 20% of my fat has been shed! Was there more to do then? I did become shaplier, but the blob concentrated in the middle was still quite an eyesore. Dr Tan then suggested we go through another round of CoolSculpting. In all honesty, I was delirious that more could still be done! But at the same time, I was worried about the discomfort which I had to bare for a week the previous time. So, once again, we went ahead with 12 applicators! Surprisingly, this round was very pleasurable. Previously I was shivering in the room. I don't know if it was the airconditioning or was it the fact that my fats were frozen? So this time round, I got smart. I brought along a crop jacket and socks! I was so comfortable, during one application, I actually fell asleep!

To prepare for the treatment, Dr. Terence Tan first used the CoolAdvantage templates to mark out the
areas that required treatment. The clinic assistant, Rebecca, then applied gel pads onto the treatment area to protect the skin during treatment. After each treatment cycle, Rebecca removed the applicator and massaged the treated area. Though there was slight discomfort, it was manageable. This helps to speed up the breakdown of the crystallised,  dead fat cells, which will be passed out by the body naturally. As sadistic as it sounds, there was a sudden surge of ecstasy each time she massaged as it meant that the scene where the fine white sand touches with the luminous pink of the setting sun, is not too distant!

Several machines working in tandem

The aftermath was really good too. If you recall, during my first treatment, there had been bruises and redness immediately after treatment. However this time round, NOTHING. There was absolutely no downtime and I was prancing to dinner after about 5 hours. This was shorter than my first round. This was because, my area of fats has decreased and I was able to have on me multiple applicators working in tandem. Each application was 35 minutes hence time was significantly cut when a few applicators were working together.

Here was the treatment prescribed for me:
- 10 CoolAdvantage applicators
- Two CoolAdvantage Petite applicators
Upper abdomen: Two CoolAdvantage
Lower abdomen: Four CoolAdvantage
Left flank: 2 CoolAdvantage 1 CoolAdvantage Petite
Right flank: 2 CoolAdvantage 1 CoolAdvantage Petite

In between, however, one of the applicators indicated a "thermal error" after running for a few minutes. It is a safety feature built into the CoolSculpting machine, which stops the treatment it detects that the area treated is getting too cold. I learnt that each applicator has sensors which would regulate the temperature. The temperature has to be maintained at minus 11 degrees celsius. This meant that I could only proceed with treatment for that area 24 hours later. This was really reassuring that caution had been exercised when building this machine.

Compare & Contrast

Definitely flatter tummy!

can you see my curves?

Tried to pinch a layer of fats and this is all I could manage.

Here's a video of how the entire process looks like

Dr. Tan mentioned that more fats will be frozen with this second session. However, it isn't an overnight thing. it will take approximately 2 to 3 months. For that flatter tummy and bye bye mumtum, I am willing to wait! How do you feel about cladding on a bikini and strutting down the golden beach? Most of us would shy away from it and after having two kids, I was certainly in that category as well. I thought all hope was lost since I did not want anything invasive to be done, but lo and behold, CoolSculpting arrived! I thought it was just a dream to feel confident when I put on that bikini. But looks like dreams do come true! We just have to let it go! Let the fats go in this case!

Beach holiday, Here I come! Thanks to Coolsculpting with Halley Body Slimming Clinic

Wednesday, October 23, 2019

The pristine beach was covered with powdered white sand. Colourful towels ornamented the sun bleached landscape. Tanned bodies in fancy bikinis, strutting along the edge of the water or lying in the scorching hot sun with a pair of sunglasses. I, was one of those tanned beach babe wannabes once upon a time. When I was in my twenties, hanging out at the beaches of Sentosa every weekend was the coolest thing to do. While I didn't exactly have washboard abs back then, I was definitely on the slim side.

Fast forward 20 years later, after giving birth to 2 lovely children, I still harbour the thought of being a beach babe but the obstruction is big. With childbirth, motherhood and of course, age, my tummy was screaming the word FAT. The flabby lump together with loose skin scarred by my battle during pregnancy, was quite a scary sight. I was very conscious each time I clad on my bikini. So much so that I retreated to wearing a one piece or even my sports shorts while swimming. Every weekend, when my children are having their swimming lessons, their father would be the one in the pool with them. They asked me why. It wasn't that I couldn't swim. I could. And am good at it. I was simply a little uncomfortable with that blob.

For years, I tried dieting and exercising but to no avail. Crash diet caused me to have a very bad case of gastritis back then and intense exercising caused me to have bad knees. So when I heard about CoolSculpting offered at Halley Body Slimming Clinic (Halley Body), you can imagine the joy in my heart! Finally, a non-invasive treatment to rid my fats!

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting®  is an US FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment that utilises cryolipolysis technology that targets only fat cells. No needles! The frozen and crystallised fat cells are eliminated and the fat cells are gone for good. With this device, the doctor can perform spot reduction and body contouring with the kind of precision that is impossible with any spot toning exercise. Meaning to say, you are able to reduce the fats at your tummy, your arms, your love-handles, your thighs or even your chin! It is very specific. It isn't a weight loss program which in most cases may not be sustainable should you lead an unhealthy lifestyle. It is a fat reduction procedure which helps you to achieve the contour that you've always wanted.

Did you know?
Did you know that at the age of 5, the body stops producing new fat cells. Hence, whatever fat cells you lose during cryolipolysis, you lose them forever! The remaining fat cells merely become bigger or smaller. The actual number of fat cells remain exactly the same. The skin, muscle, connective tissues and nerves are not affected. CoolSculpting reduces up to 25% of fat cells in the treated areas each time. It is really the answer to achieving that hour-glass figure which every girl wants.

My experience....

Consultation

On the day of the consultation, prior to meeting Dr. Terence Tan, the Medical Director of Halley Body and its sister clinic for facial aesthetics, Halley Medical Aesthetics, the clinic assistant took my weight, waist measurements and blood pressure. Halley Body specialises in non-invasive no downtime weight management, fat reduction, body firming and muscle toning treatments. The team at Halley Body had to ascertain if I was a good candidate for the procedure. You see, not everyone is suitable for this procedure. It is best to let the doctor assess your condition and let him prescribe the most suitable fat reduction treatment for you as there are many options available. During the actual consultation with Dr. Terence Tan, he asked me several questions which included whether I was on any dieting pills. Dr. Terence Tan prescribed 11 CoolAdvantage and one CoolAdvantage Plus applicators to treat the stubborn fat on my abdomen and flanks. Compared to legacy CoolSculpting applicators, the CoolAdvantage range of applicators reduces treatment time by nearly half depending on the type of applicator used.

For instance, treatment time for the traditional CoolSculpting applicator takes 60 mins but this duration is reduced to 35 mins with the CoolAdvantage applicator. The CoolAdvantage range of applicators also features an enhanced cup design for improved patient comfort as well as a larger cooling area to treat a bigger area.

He then proceeded to marking out the various areas which needed attention. He pointed out that it was critical to mark them with different colours to avoid any mistakes made. After the consultation, I was given a form to sign my consent.

The Actual Treatment
I didn't quite know what to expect. I was only told that each CoolAdvantage applicator would take 35 minutes. In addition, one CoolAdvantage Plus applicator would be used for the biggest area and that would take 45 minutes. Hence with 12 applicators being done, I would need a grand total of 430 minutes which translates to a whopping 7+hours! But of course, you may not require 12 applicators like me. It is a case to case basis and the number of applicators and sessions required by each individual is different. But we were all out to kill those stubborn fats, hence 12 was my magic number. I was armed with my battery pack, my snacks and a book. I even told myself this was the perfect time to do nothing but sleep! I was looking forward to it.

Step 1:
I put on a dress on that day as I read that while there wasn't going to be any down time, one may swell a little. Hence a loose dress would be ideal. I was given an outfit to change. It consisted of a spaghetti top and a baggy pants.

Mandy, the friendly therapist, marked out my areas of treatment as per Dr. Terence Tan's initial CoolSculpting plan. I looked like I was going for a major liposuction procedure. The markings are to ensure proper placement of the applicator. The applicators came in various sizes and different surface area required different sizes. I proceeded to lay down on the recliner and was given pillows and blankets to keep me comfortable. Mandy was really friendly and constantly checked if I was feeling alright.

In fact, a call bell was given to me in case I needed any assistance during the procedure should the therapist be out of the room.

Step 2:

A cooling gel-pad was placed over the area where an applicator was going to be placed. This pad is intended to protect the skin during treatment

Step 3:

Next, the CoolAdvantage applicator was placed over it. The applicator basically uses vacuum pressure to draw tissue into the cooling panels. On a scale of 10 for discomfort, I gave this a 0.5. It tugging wasn't painful at all and after minutes of application, I could feel the coolness. This subsequently caused that area to be numbed. I even fell asleep on several occasions. When the applicator was removed, the treated area was a little red and raised. Seeing that I was taking it well, Mandy proceeded to use two CoolAdvantage applicators at the same time.

In fact, for time-starved individuals, Halley Body offers QuadSculpting, which is the use of  four CoolSculpting machines to treat four areas at one go! This can of course, provided the four areas do not overlap. With that, the treatment duration will be four times faster!

Step 4:

The real deal came when the treated area was massaged. I would be lying if I told you I was as cool as a cucumber. I was not. The massage was not what one would usually get at a spa. On the pain-o-meter, this rated a 4/10 for me. However, this step was crucial to speed up the breakdown of the frozen dead fat cells following CoolSculpting. No pain no gain right? In fact, if one had gone through childbirth, particularly a C-section, this really was insignificant.

The entire procedure took approximately 6 hours for me, with a few toilet breaks in between. I was really enjoying my time on the chair, following up on social media, online shopping and my readings. However, midway, I began to feel cold. I was shivering like a leaf and Mandy handed me an extra blanket. This was probably because the central aircon was a little cold. Note to self: to wear socks and probably put on a cropped jacket on my next visit. You would not want to be wearing anything long or covered up because the gel will get transferred to your outfit.

Immediately after the process, I was bruised and there was temporary redness. I was assured that these were normal and will go away with time. I guess this is akin to the traditional Chinese way of using heated glass jars for better blood circulation -- Ba Guan. The bruise went away in about 3 days.

Day 1
I got up with an aching feeling. This was unlike your typical muscle aches. I touched the treated areas and it felt wobbly and swollen at the same time. It was extremely sensitive and any close contact would see me hitting the person. There was a sensation of fullness and tenderness as I walked and I totally regretted not taking the day off. On the pain-o-meter, I was between 4 and 5/10 on day 1.

Day 4 - 7

The tingling, sensitive and aching feeling however did diminish as the days went by and at approximately day 7, the discomfort reduced significantly. I did however feel swollen during this period of time and it felt like I had several fat globules swimming under my skin. These temporary side effects did not hinder my day to day activities.

After 2 weeks....

I was told that it takes about 2 to 3 months for the body to pass the dead fat cells out of the body. Visible results can be seen in a matter of weeks and in fact, I am beginning to feel that my clothes fit better and the bulge got smaller.

Even the husband commented that I didn't have much to squeeze. After treatment, your body gradually metabolizes and naturally expels the frozen fat cells.

Numbers don't lie. I measured my girth under my belly button prior to CoolSculpting and it measured a 89cm. Now, it's 86cm. For the waist area, I am seeing a more significant decrease of approximately 5cm! That's almost 2 inches! Things have not even peaked. In some cases, the final results won't appear till after 6 months. The remaining fat cells will condense, reducing the fat layer. I am excited!

Me at 2 weeks after treatment (13 October 2019)

I am very certain that I will achieve a more contoured body with CoolSculpting! With a bated breath, I should start carting out bikinis and book me a beach holiday!

Review: Ultherapy. The alternative to surgical facelift

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

Sometime in November 2016, I was invited by LS Aesthetic Clinic to try out a new treatment of theirs -- Ultherapy: a non-surgical, non-invasive aesthetic treatment that uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten skin, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, as well as stimulate the body's natural collagen production. My first thoughts were " ok, great, so someone realises that I am aging and am in dire need of help. Things are sagging and it is too obvious to ignore."

Growing up, I have never been too concerned about beauty. I never liked pink and hated frilly dresses. I gravitated towards mixing with the boys and even with female friends, we competed on who had shorter hair. Looking back, those were my benchmarks of beauty. So, to me, beauty wasn't on my priority list. Things were however hard for me, especially during my JC days when I had to deal with very bad acne which started sometime when I completed my O levels. Blame it on bad genes and a crazy mother who enjoys popping my pimples. It affected my self-esteem so much that would wallow in sadness at times. Comparisons got the better of me when I was surrounded by girls with flawless skin who were prowled upon by boys with chiselled faces. Following that, whilst I was dating, I was also subjected to ridicules by the bunch of friends my then boyfriend, now husband, was hanging out with. They were mean. So I was determined to change. However, no matter what facial I went to, it didn't reap much effects. Side effects yes, but not for the better. After marriage and kids, probably due to age, the acne situation got better. I did get occasional breakouts but they could be covered easily with concealer.  But something else changed. The wrinkles started appearing and I somehow felt gravity was being merciless on me. Becoming a mom changed my lifestyle on many fronts and one of them is beauty. I started to neglect myself as I tried to survive by the skin of my teeth each and every day. The clock will not stop ticking, and beauty is in your hands, so I jumped at this chance to try out this treatment which is probably the next best thing after plastic surgery or botox.

How did the treatment go?

On that very day, their in-house medical director, Dr Allan Kok, an established aesthetic doctor in Singapore with more than 10 years of experience in various skin conditions, accessed my skin condition and confirmed that I am suitable for the therapy after a consultation. I was offered the lower face treatment.

Oh no!! Wrinkles and saggy skin on the neck!

The nurses applied a topical numbing cream on my lower face and before the therapy, I was given painkillers. I initially didn't want to take them as I thought my threshold for pain should be pretty high given that I have gone through childbirth not once, but twice. BUT, I was thankful I took those painkillers! Before the treatment, Dr Kok explained to me that as the ultrasound energy is delivered, I will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated. He informed that after the treatment I might have a bruised sensation for the next couple of days. Some people may even experience slight swelling for a week. All these were actually secondary. I was more concerned about the pain! He was candid about it and said that comfort level vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. Some may feel that it is an ant bite, whilst others may not. Well, nothing could be worse than giving birth right?

Ultrasound imaging allows the doctor to see where the treatment energy will be delivered.

In all honesty, when the pulses were initiated on the bone area, it was painful. I wanted to bash someone up there and then. However, it was tolerable when it was initiated elsewhere. There were two stages. Dr Kok delivered the energy first at a deeper level -- 4.5mm where the muscle is situated and later at 3.0mm skin deep. This is below the epidermis and the dermis, where the fat and connective tissues are situated. Typically lasers and radio-frequency are only able to reach the dermis layer and to reach as deep as the muscle, the only other option is surgical facelift. Upon administering the second stage (3.0mm), probably due to the fact that I was already numbed, the sensation this time was really like a bunch of ants biting my chin.

After the procedure, I could resume my normal activities immediately without having to follow any special post-treatment measures. In fact, right after my treatment, I dated the hubs. I told him I was going for a procedure similar to a facial and he was expecting to see a red-faced middle-aged woman. But, when he saw me, he was surprised and thought I did not go for any treatment. There were no redness or swelling immediately after the treatment.

How Ultherapy treatment works?

Unlike lasers, radio-frequency and other technologies, Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver energy at optimal depths, temperature and precision. Also unique to Ultherapy is the use of ultrasound imaging, which allows practitioners to see the layers of tissue they are treating, ensuring energy is delivered safely and to where it will be most beneficial.

While Ultherapy does not duplicate the results of a facelift, it's an exciting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery and for patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.

About Ultherapy

The Ultherapy treatment is the only non-invasive procedure U.S. FDA-cleared to lift skin not he neck, under the chin and on the eyebrow. Now, also the only non-invasive treatment to improve lines and wrinkles on the décolleté. Ultherapy can help you achieve a fresher, more youthful look from your brow to your chest! It is:

  • Non-invasive
  • No downtime
  • Builds collagen
  • Natural results
  • Single treatment
  • Safe ultrasound

Ultherapy delivers focused ultrasound energy to the same foundational layer typically addressed by surgeons during cosmetic surgery -- without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.

This energy initiates the body's natural response to stimulate the growth of fresh , new collagen and strengthen weak collagen. COLLAGEN! That's what every woman needs!

Some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over 2-3months as new collagen builds, gradually lifting and tightening skin.

Below are some photos I have taken since day one till now. The top left hand photo being the before-treatment photo and the bottom right photo being the most recent shot taken during Chinese New Year. I do find that the V shape face is slowly surfacing. I have naturally broad jaws and unless I break those bones or go for plastic surgery, I'm probably not gonna change much of that. However, seeing the V shape coming out is really encouraging! The skin does feel a tad tighter too even though I neglected my skin badly due to the clash with dengue. You can read it here. I was rather surprised that the skin texture is improving too despite abandoning my usual beauty regime during that one month. Even though only my lower face was treated, it feels like the collagen regeneration is spreading to my cheeks. It looks plumper. Only a single treatment is required as the collagen regeneration will continue throughout the year. Patients would usually go back yearly for followups. This is indeed an alternative to botox which I am too chicken to try.

Me thinks I am looking younger, don't you?

This was taken a few days after the treatment and I did notice a very slight swelling on one side of my face. The bashed up / muscle ache feeling on my jaws lasted for approximately 4 days.

If you think my results are too subtle (coz in the first place perhaps I don't have much sagging to begin with *denial mode), check out the below shots:

This new treatment has also been creating a huge buzz in the States. Hollywood stars like Real Housewife Adriana De Moura has also opted Ultherapy as a more moderate yet effective approach.

"A more moderate approach taken by celebs....like Reality Housewife Adriana De Moura....is to undergo anti-aging procedures like Ultherapy, what some call 'Spanx for skin'"

Indeed, beauty is a pain in all aspects. However, no pain no gain right? The pain shall pass, but the beauty will remain :)

Prices range from $260 for an Ultherapy underage treatment to $3950 (before GST) for a Full Face and neck treatment. A steal compared to plastic surgery!
